Online education has already caused a ripple effect within businesses, and now specialized programs are allowing people to revisit their careers and earn a promotion. For businesses operating in the healthcare industry, there is an increasing need for qualified professionals, nurses being high in demand among the lot.

Accelerated programs are allowing nursing and even non-nursing graduates to pursue careers within healthcare and make the most of this economic opportunity. Travis Snider, a business owner and consultant, believes that accelerated programs are vital for strengthening businesses. He is part of the Small Business Accelerator Program, which envisages improving the business capacity of individuals by working on their intellectual and fiscal assets.

Keeping up with the discourse

The education industry within the U.S. has undergone widespread changes due to input from the digital side. Due to the presence of offsite learning options, onsite institutions are revisiting their policies to remain competitive.

Also important to note is that careers within the healthcare industry are now requiring increased qualification. This can be seen with the examples of states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey, in which hospitals have directed nurses to earn a Bachelor’s degree in nursing within the coming ten years.


Secondly, there is legislation such as the HB 1631, which requires healthcare institutes to employ ‘safe staffing’ measures. This is an opportunity in the sense that it would create a rapid demand for employees who meet the designated criteria.

Among different institutions in states including Pennsylvania is the Gwynedd Mercy University, which has launched accelerated degree programs to cater to the new legislation. The model is ideally suited to nurses who are mandated by hospitals to earn a degree.

David Collins, a business professor at Harvard, highlights that the healthcare industry within America is essentially education driven. The notion of specialization within healthcare equals better economic outcomes like specialized education, which means a better academic outcome. In this way, businesses within healthcare should focus on a specialized human resource.

Ease of approach

The recent shifts in the economy have resulted in many ‘second-degree’ students. In the status quo, the nursing program remains one of the most efficient ones considering that there are online and accelerated degree options in the mix too.

Such programs allow individuals to become registered nurses within a period of 12 to 18 month, which is massively cost effective.

Institutes that have adopted such programs have highlighted that these programs have a higher academic productivity. The reduced time span is an intrinsic motivator for students who intend to make the most of the opportunity.

The Institute of Medicine has been making recommendations for hospitals to induct nurses with higher or uniform educational qualifications. While many would deem this as a burden, it is actually an incentive. The economic benefits for existing registered nurses would improve after earning their Bachelors and secondly new human resource gearing for the health industry now know which academic areas to focus on.
